What Is CBD?
Whether its for deep sleep, anti-anxiety, or boosting cognitive health, CBD is one of the fastest growing and most effective alternative medicines on the global market. CBD stands for Cannabidiol, one of the 113 different cannabinoids present in Cannabis. Along with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD makes up 40% of the plant’s extract. Due to increasing medical cannabis legalization around the world and expanding hemp cultivation, CBD has become rapidly integrated into healthcare and daily consumer use. In fact, a recent report from February 20 projected the market value of CBD at $62.61 billion by 2030.
“In recent years, CBD benefits have become increasingly recognized in modern wellness and alternative medicine.”
An easy way to understand CBD
Think of cannabis as the plant, and THC and CBD as two very different ingredients within it. Your body was built to receive CBD, because each of us has an entire biological network called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a master regulator woven through your brain, immune system, nervous system, and organs, whose job is to keep everything in balance. Like a lock and key, every cell in your body has receptors just waiting for the right molecule to fit into them and trigger a response — and CBD is one of those keys, gently modulating pain, inflammation, mood, and stress signals across your whole body.
From Plant to Product: How CBD Is Sourced
1.Where the Hemp Comes From
The quality of the CBD depends directly on the cultivation of the hemp it is extracted from. For example, Dr. CBD — the brand we collaborated with for this piece — uses indoor cultivation. By controlling the soil, light, nutrition, humidity, and temperature, they can ensure a high standard quality to their hemp, which in turn ensures a high standard to the CBD extracts
2.Extraction Methods
Once the CBD plant is ready for harvest, it is picked, trimmed, dried, and finely ground to increase surface area. Next, it is heated at a high temperature for the decarboxylation process to take place. This is similar to how THC edibles are made, by first baking the flower in an oven.
Once the CBD is decarboxylated, it is extracted using one of two ways. One is ethanol extraction where the plant is soaked in ethanol, filtered, chilled to -40 degrees celsius, and finally allowed to evaporate out. Once all the ethanol has evaporated, you are left with pure CBD oil.
Another method of extraction is using supercritical CO2 (carbon dioxide). In this method, the CBD plant matter is placed in a pressurized chamber and CO2 is pumped in. Due to the high pressure of the CO2, the plant matter is separated into individual compounds with no need for additional purification. Next, the CO2 is condensed into liquid form to be reused or processed further.
The Types of CBD — Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum vs. Isolate
It is important to understand the different types of extracts before purchasing and using each medically.
Full-spectrum CBD contains multiple natural compounds including trace amounts (<0.3%) of THC. Research suggests this form of extract is the most effective due to a concept called the “entourage effect”. This is the theory that cannabis compounds such as terpenes, cannabinoids, and flavonoids all work synergistically to produce a greater therapeutic benefit than any single compound alone. This form of CBD is best for those looking for oil extracts without THC.
Next is broad-spectrum, which goes through further processing to remove almost all traces of THC but still retains a broad array of cannabinoids and terpenes.
The last and purest form of CBD is CBD isolate — with all other cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant material removed. The CBD isolate appears as a white powder. This product is best for users looking for extremely high doses of CBD to add to foods, beverages, or lotions.
CBD as a Shield Against 'Bad Highs'
Earlier, we went over how CBD fits like a key into the lock of the CB1 receptors in your body. What is even more fascinating, is that CBD can change the shape of your CB1 receptor. This change in shape makes it so THC cannot overstimulate the endocannabinoid system, acting as a partial antagonist to prevent “bad highs” and paranoia. In human biology we call this allosteric modulation. This is why strains with even 1-2% of CBD or edibles which are 1:1 CBD:THC can provide a more balanced and relaxing experience than purely high THC products.
Therapeutic Applications of CBD
1.Epilepsy & Seizure Management
In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex as the first cannabis-based medication to treat seizures in patients aged 2 years and older. as a purified plant-derived CBD oral solution, this medication was given to those suffering from Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome — rare, severe, and treatment resistant conditions which cause epilepsy.
In long term studies, the use of Epidiolex reduced seizures in patients by up to 50%. Similar to how CBD can shield the effect of a bad highs, it blocks the GPR55 receptor and inhibits calcium release which can cause seizures. Furthermore, CBD also reduces uptake of adenosine and GABA, promoting a calming effect. All these qualities make CBD an excellent anticonvulsant greatly improving outcomes in patients suffering from epilepsy or seizures.
2.Sleep & Insomnia
CBD use has been shown to reduce REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, as well as anxiety-driven insomnia. The compound has potential in supporting relaxation, managing racing thoughts, and allowing for better sleep onset. Overall, research suggests that use of CBD can better overall sleep quality.
Dr. CBD — Inside the Brand
Dr. CBD started in 2019 with a mission to integrate Eastern herbal medicine with Western scientific innovation. Today, they are the leaders in Thailand’s CBD market, selling CBD products that can be used for skincare, pain relief, and even hair growth. We asked them a few questions about their CBD cultivation and medical uses for CBD. You can read the full interview attached below.

Q&A with Dr. CBD Marketing Team
Q : Where is the hemp grown that is eventually extracted into Dr. CBD oil ?
A : Dr. CBD grows its hemp in-house using a fully controlled indoor cultivation system. Temperature, light, humidity, and nutrients are all tightly monitored to ensure consistent quality and maximum safety. This approach minimizes contamination risk and allows precise control over key cannabinoid concentrations.
Q : How do you test your soil and product? Are you required to meet GACP guidelines?
A : Our cultivation follows GACP guidelines. Pre-planting soil is analyzed for heavy metals, chemical residues, microbial content, and pH levels. Finished products are tested for CBD concentration, THC compliance with legal limits, and various contaminants. Every production batch must pass quality checks before it reaches consumers.
Q : What is the minimum required dosage of CBD for noticeable effects?
A : Effective dosage is highly individual. Generally, we recommend starting with 5–10mg per day and adjusting based on your body's response.
Q : Are your products mainly full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or a CBD isolate?
A : Dr. CBD offers both CBD Broad Spectrum Oil and CBD Isolate Powder, giving customers the flexibility to choose based on their specific needs and preferences.
Q : What is the most effective use case for CBD?
A : CBD is most commonly used to help manage stress, improve sleep quality, and relieve inflammation-related discomfort.
Q : Besides pain relief and sleep aid, CBD can also benefit your skin. Can you tell us more about how CBD could help with skin care?
A : CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help reduce redness, regulate sebum production, and soothe irritated skin. This makes it particularly well-suited for skincare products targeting sensitive or acne-prone skin types.
